Portrait of Dr Paul Matewele

Dr Paul Matewele

Dr Paul Matewele was a leading microbiologist, and a senior lecturer in microbiology immunology at London Metropolitan University where he had been for over 30 years. He is reported to have died at Barnet Hospital on Tuesday 31 March 2020 after contracting COVID-19.

Dr Matewele had published several studies on the dangers of life-threatening bacteria being passed through cash and public transport.

His colleague Professor Gary McLean is reported to have said: "Paul was the most gentle soul. [He] always had a huge smile. He was a passionate microbiologist, well loved by his students and always a calm and kind colleague. He will be really missed by all our staff and students. "

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

We will remember Dr Paul Matewele.
