Portrait of Rizal Manalo

Rizal Manalo

Rizal Manalo was a father-of-two and known as Zaldy to friends and colleagues. He worked as a nurse on ward five at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Denbighshire and had been in the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board area since moving from the Philippines in 2001.

A colleague Karen Davies said: "He was a caring and compassionate member of the team, a true gentleman”. Colleagues added that Zaldy was known as their 'Kuya', an ‘old brother’ within the Filipino community, and that he loved to socialise and sing, particularly in karaoke.

The nurse who was "well respected and loved by all his patients and colleagues" died of COVID-19 on Sunday 14 June 2020 at the age of 51 after spending several weeks in the hospital where he worked – mainly in critical care.

His wife, Agnes, said: "Zaldy is a hard working person who loved his job dearly. He's a good husband and a loving father to his children. He protected and cared for us."

Matron for ward five at Glan Clwyd Hospital Karen Davies said: "Zaldy would always greet you with a smile in the morning and always had a story to tell. He was a caring and compassionate member of the team, a true gentleman."

Managing Director at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Rab McEwan said: "Zaldy was a popular and respected member of the nursing team on ward five and we will miss him greatly.

"It's always hard when someone who serves the NHS dies before their time. We are desolate, and send our deepest sympathies to Zaldy's family, colleagues and friends."

We will remember Rizal Manalo.
